Early start to get to the flight for departure to Singapore. Naturally for our family, after the 2nd exit, we realised we had forgotten to bring the camera recharger & so had to eventually turn back to retrieve it. It was all pretty exciting – even at 5.00am!
Our departure from Brisbane was on time and as usual the Singapore Airlines staff were great. Much excitement for Simon and Rosie to have their own video screens with movies and games galore.
Arrived in Singapore and cleared customs efficiently, taxi to hotel and checked in to 2 compact rooms with great views over Singapore and the marina district. Singapore wasn’t as hot and humid as in previous trips – although still hot & humid enough to be uncomfortable.
Had dinner the first night at Jumbo’s, with a large chilli crab & Rose had satay. Service slow, plus we were tired & hot. Visited Clark Quay on the way home – lots of market stalls & life, but too hot. Decided to have a drink and watch the passing parade, but was a little shocked to see the bill for $45 for 2 beers and 2 softdrinks.
Sunday 7 December: Walked from the hotel to Arab street, however as it was Haj, everything was closed. Saw a fabulous shop called “Dinky Di” which was Russian artefacts?? – a true aladdin’s cave of “stuff” – more a junk shop. Walked to little India – lots of sights, smells & general crowding then caught MRT to Chinatown which was a lot tidier & “controlled” although Pagoda street stalls was still the same crowd of hawkers flogging the same junk at ridiculous prices - Rose bought a $15 item that we managed to pay $5 for because we were the "lucky first customer" for the day!. Then went to Orchard Road to show the kids the “Singapore experience” of mall after mall of retail therapy. Headed back after a short time for a welcome swim in the hotel pool, before the true tourist experience of the Long Bar at Raffles - $65.00 for 1 beer, a G&T, & 2 softdrink (& to think that we considered a 2nd round (obviously before we got the bill).
Caught MRT to Newton Circus for dinner at the hawker stalls. Simon was still very much under the weather, taking drugs every 4 hours & with no appetite. After dinner headed back to hotel to shower, change & pack for our midnight flight to France.
